The Traitor Baru Cormorant

The Empire of Masks arrives on Baru's island with coin and ink, doctrine and compass, soap and lies. It rewrites her culture, criminalises her people's customs and disposes of one of her fathers. So Baru swallows her hatred, takes the Masquerade's examinations and sets out to climb high enough inside it to free her home from the inside. To test her loyalty the Masquerade posts her as Imperial Accountant to Aurdwynn, a province of rebel dukes, informants and old grudges, where she will have to decide how much of herself she is willing to spend.
