⭐⭐⭐
“If they say I’m missing, I’m not. I’ve been killed – and I need you to know that I love you.”
✦ TLDR ✦
This book has a very interesting premise and a unique writing style. It wasn’t all from character POV’s, the story unfolded partially through documents and transcripts, which I found quite enjoyable. I love when authors take risks and diverge from the expected. It was overall an entertaining story, but it honestly wasn’t one of my favourite thrillers.
✦ Writing ✦
Despite this not being one of my favourites, I still thought the writing was good. Kerry Wilkinson did a good job at painting a picture of a scene and conveying how the characters were feeling. There wasn’t much fluff in terms of writing style, it was very straight to the point which is what I like in thrillers.
✦ Pacing ✦
My key problem with this book was the pacing. It had a really strong start with Eve finding the tapes and starting to listen to them. It gripped me for a while, wondering what was going on. The ending was also very strong, with some twists that were slightly predictable (which I didn’t find to be a big problem), it wrapped up the story nicely. However, the middle of the book just lacked that excitement. I found some of the dialogue a bit mundane and repetitive and I struggled picking up the book for a while.
✦ Characters ✦
Some of the characters fell a little flat, I didn’t necessarily like or dislike them, but that was the problem. I just didn’t really care much about them, they just felt like they were there. We got some depth to the main character and I liked how those mysterious gaps were filled and really added to Eve’s personality. But the others just felt present, not part of the story.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the crew at Bookouture for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
