Synopsis

In the Empire of Khanum, humanity huddles behind vast sea walls against the Leviathans — titanic monsters that rise from the ocean each wet season to batter the ramparts. To fight them, the Empire alters its own people with strange biological grafts, breeding specialists whose bodies are engineered for a single purpose. Dinios Kol is one such augmentation: an assistant whose memory is flawless, able to record every detail he encounters.

When a bizarre and grisly murder occurs — an Imperial officer killed by a tree that erupts, fully grown, from inside his body — Din is dispatched as the eyes and ears of his brilliant, eccentric, and reclusive superior, the investigator Ana Dolabra. Ana refuses to leave her rooms and often works blindfolded, yet her mind is razor-sharp, and through Din's meticulous observations she begins to unravel a conspiracy that reaches to the highest and most dangerous corners of the Empire.

Robert Jackson Bennett's The Tainted Cup is an inventive fantasy murder mystery — a Holmes-and-Watson pairing transplanted into a richly imagined, biopunk world of engineered bodies and monstrous threats. Winner of the Hugo and World Fantasy Awards, it is the propulsive first book in the Shadow of the Leviathan series.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to read anything before The Tainted Cup?

No. It is the first book in Robert Jackson Bennett's Shadow of the Leviathan series and starts the story from the beginning — its US publisher, Del Rey, also markets the run as the Ana & Din Mysteries, so you may see either name. The sequel, A Drop of Corruption, followed in 2025.

  • Did The Tainted Cup win any awards?

Yes — two major ones. It won the 2025 Hugo Award for Best Novel and the 2025 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel. It was a finalist, rather than the winner, in three other races: the 2025 Edgar Award for Best Novel (won by Charlotte Vassell's The In Crowd), the 2025 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel (won by T. Kingfisher's A Sorceress Comes to Call), and the 2024 Goodreads Choice Award for Fantasy.

  • Is The Tainted Cup a fantasy novel or a mystery?

Both, deliberately. It is a fair-play detective story — a murder investigated through clues the reader can follow — set in an invented empire with its own biology, politics and monsters. Reviewers describe the pairing of the reclusive investigator Ana Dolabra with her assistant Din Kol as a Holmes-and-Watson dynamic moved into secondary-world fantasy; Kirkus called it "a drawing-room mystery, albeit the drawing room is the size of a small otherworldly kingdom."
