Whenever somebody asks me what kind of mystery I like, I redirect 'em to that scene in True Detective S01 where Cohle asks a simple question :
"You ever been huntin', Marty?"
That story was untouchable like Eliot Ness. The emotion I felt while watching that series was only replicated thrice since. When I read Devotion of Suspect X in 2016. When I watched Memories of Murder in 2017. And November 2023, when I read The Sundown Motel.
I love the raw aspect of the genre where CCTV, GPS b••••••• takes the backseat and we go old school. Where things are being unravelled through witness testimonies, transcripts, old news paper articles and photographs.
We see Carly in the present, piecing together the evidence, while simultaneously witnessing Vivian in 1982 as she creates that very evidence. The intrigue unfolds against the moody backdrop of November's weather.
You actually see the hunting. You actually see a 20 year old girl, flying too close to the sun, almost outsmarting the hunter and in the center of it all, was a haunted Motel. The sheer dread I felt during the first few chapters was thick to the point of being palpable.
This wasn't a whodunnit. This was about proving who did it and it was brilliantly executed.
