Set in the early 1900s in the fictional New England college town of Thrupp, and narrated by the pompous Nicholas Van Tassel, All He Ever Wanted is at once an academic satire, a period novel, and a tale of suspense. Shreve's ability to nimbly hop through genres brings a liveliness to this story of love gone depressingly wrong. Van Tassel is an undistinguished professor of rhetoric at Thrupp College and a confirmed bachelor when he meets--in no less flamy a scenario than a hotel fire--the arresting Miss Etna Bliss. Immediately smitten, he woos and wins her. At least, he persuades her to become his wife. But Van Tassel hasn't really won her. Etna keeps her secrets and her feelings to herself. The extent of her withholding only becomes clear after a couple of kids and a decade or so of marriage. Then we find out that she's been creating a secret haven for herself all along. Van Tassel is in turn revealed--through his own priggish, puffed-up sentences--as something of a monster. The book is cleverly done; watching Etna through Van Tassel's eyes is like looking at beautiful bird from a hungry cat's point of view. But Van Tassel's voice might be too well written; he's pedantic and dull and snarky all at once, and by the end we find that we, like Etna, can't bear his company a minute longer.--Claire Dederer","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01kx246t19kn1s0n7xnpqy9g93.jpg?v=fdd69be1c5","LCF~BetQ?w4T00WXX9xb0fMxxa.8",2005,372,[383
"01kx246t13e4k2f90rbmx61ang","anita-shreve-upzf","Anita Shreve",[388,392
34,"Historical Romance","historical-romance
[
[340,103],[342,397,185],"betrayal
"genre_mood
402,425,446,470,489,509
"01kwzx3e2fm2cv5ye5k3jsfjg3","hades-argentina-uwzf","Hades, Argentina","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01kwzx3e36n6xnrtyn9bsqxvhv.jpg?v=979f278ffd","LFM?L]%L+#%2.lK%Qn$kU^K%aeoz",[409
"01kwzx3e30gvdpttxvv2v3v03d","daniel-loedel-iqvv","Daniel Loedel",[414,418,419
70,"History","history
[
[103,423],"atmospheric",[185,342
"01kx23g7gwxveesfbx7ea62t04","the-comeback-ttr0","The Comeback","A TODAY SHOW #ReadWithJenna BOOK CLUB PICK! - An empowering, behind-the-scenes novel of a young Hollywood actress and the dark secret she's ready to confront. Gwendolyn and Estella have always been as close as sisters can be. Growing up in a wealthy, eminent, and sometimes deceitful family, they’ve relied on each other for support and confidence. But now Gwendolyn is lying in a coma, the sole survivor of Estella’s poisoning of their whole clan. As Gwendolyn struggles to regain consciousness, she desperately retraces her memories, trying to uncover the moment that led to this shocking act. Was it their aunt’s mysterious death at sea? Estella’s unhappy marriage to a dangerously brutish man? Or were the shifting loyalties and unspoken resentments at the heart of their opulent world too much to bear? Can Gwendolyn, at last, confront the carefully buried mysteries in their family’s past and the truth about who she and her sister really are? When we first meet Ruby, a Métis woman in her thirties, her life is spinning out of control. She’s angling to sleep with her counselor while also rekindling an old relationship she knows will only bring more heartache. But as we soon learn, Ruby’s story is far more complex than even she can imagine. Given up for adoption as an infant, Ruby is raised by a white couple who understand little of her Indigenous heritage. This is the great mystery that hovers over Ruby’s life—who her people are and how to reconcile what is missing. As the novel spans time and multiple points of view, we meet the people connected to Ruby: her birth parents and grandparents; her adoptive parents; the men and women Ruby has been romantically involved with; a beloved uncle; and Ruby’s children. Taken together, these characters form a kaleidoscope of stories, giving Ruby’s life dignity and meaning. Black Buck is a hilarious, razor-sharp skewering of America's workforce; it is a propulsive, crackling debut that explores ambition and race, and makes way for a necessary new vision of the American dream.","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01kx23sbqk1qqkxzf4rrcw2cr1.jpg?v=382e43e971","LeMr;M?D~Moc,:E5tPoc^IxVJBa$",388,[590
"01kx23sbqepwqceqgqgnnb880s","mateo-askaripour-y9ij","Mateo Askaripour",[595,596
118,"Satire","satire",[
[579,136],[
"01kx23t4yh94jfyywngg4e4npk","milk-blood-heat-stories-9wtl","Milk Blood Heat Stories","SHORTLISTED FOR THE PEN/JEAN STEIN AND PEN/ROBERT W. Moniz, one of the most exciting discoveries in today's literary landscape, Milk Blood Heat depicts the sultry lives of Floridians in intergenerational tales that contemplate human connection, race, womanhood, inheritance, and the elemental darkness in us all. A livewire debut from Dantiel W. Moniz, one of the most exciting discoveries in today's literary landscape, Milk Blood Heat depicts the sultry lives of Floridians in intergenerational tales that contemplate human connection, race, womanhood, inheritance, and the elemental darkness in us all. Set among the cities and suburbs of Florida, each story delves into the ordinary worlds of young girls, women, and men who find themselves confronted by extraordinary moments of violent personal reckoning. These intimate portraits of people and relationships scour and soothe and blast a light on the nature of family, faith, forgiveness, consumption, and what we may, or may not, owe one another. A thirteen-year-old meditates on her sadness and the difference between herself and her white best friend when an unexpected tragedy occurs; a woman recovering from a miscarriage finds herself unable to let go of her daughter--whose body parts she sees throughout her daily life; a teenager resists her family's church and is accused of courting the devil; servers at a supper club cater to the insatiable cravings of their wealthy clientele; and two estranged siblings take a road-trip with their father's ashes and are forced to face the troubling reality of how he continues to shape them. Wise and subversive, spiritual and seductive, Milk Blood Heat forms an ouroboros of stories that bewitch with their truth, announcing the arrival of a bright new literary star.","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01kx23t4z3s4cydnnc72epw73e.jpg?v=a96f2f11b3","LULgtg_iE|T0o@X8r?r?ImW=bHWU",184,[613
"01kx23t4yyj87k8e3b04pdfw8m","dantiel-w-moniz-sq8n","Dantiel W.
