Paul Beatty (born June 9, 1962, in Los Angeles) is an American novelist and poet. He won the first Grand Slam Championship at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in 1990, which led to his first poetry collection, Big Bank Take Little Bank, followed by Joker, Joker, Deuce. He turned to fiction with the novels The White Boy Shuffle (1996), Tuff (2000), Slumberland (2008) and The Sellout (2015).
