It is hard to write such a sweeping history of one of the world’s most intriguing dynasty’s, and for the most part, Montefiore does this well. However, there are times when he focuses on the wrong things, makes somewhat outlandish claims without backing them up with sources, and uses outdated and perhaps even damaging phrases. I don’t know much about the other Romanov emperors except for Nicholas II, so perhaps there is more to be said. I will say that the Nicholas II sections were done pretty well, especially given the restraints.
