Synopsis

Bakery owner Willow Dalton and Zane Walker have always shared a complicated friendship. Years ago, before college, he did her the favor of taking her virginity; now he is a scrumptiously hot A-list actor with a reputation as an arrogant player and decidedly not boyfriend material. Becoming Hollywood's newest leading man means cleaning up that image, and Zane has a plan: a fake engagement to curvy, sass-mouthed Willow, complete with a very real diamond ring. He knows her better than anyone, which makes her the perfect partner for the ruse, provided no one actually gets hurt. Set on the shores of Sugar Lake in the small town of Sweetwater, this warm, funny romance follows a spirited baker who is fine with heat but may find her pretend fiance far too hot to handle. As the staged romance plays out under public scrutiny, the feelings Willow and Zane keep insisting are fake grow increasingly difficult to deny. Their friends-to-lovers story tests whether two people who have known each other forever can survive falling for real, and whether a fake engagement can become the genuine happily ever after neither will admit to wanting.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can I read The Real Thing as a standalone, or do I need to read the series in order?

You can read The Real Thing on its own. It is book 1 of Sugar Lake, one of the interconnected sub-series in Melissa Foster's Love in Bloom collection, and every Love in Bloom book is written as a standalone with its own complete romance and a guaranteed happily ever after. Reading the series in order simply lets you follow the extended family as familiar characters reappear across the books.

  • Who are the main characters in The Real Thing?

The Real Thing follows Willow Dalton and Zane Walker. Their romance is the heart of the book, set among the big, close-knit families Melissa Foster's readers return for.

  • How steamy is The Real Thing?

The Real Thing is an open-door contemporary romance, so it pairs its emotional story with on-page love scenes. Readers who prefer sweeter, closed-door versions can look for Melissa Foster's clean-language editions published under her pen name, Addison Cole.
