The wife gains a measure of freedom, but how does the repressive, abandoned husband feel about that freedom? Set in the early 1900s in the fictional New England college town of Thrupp, and narrated by the pompous Nicholas Van Tassel, All He Ever Wanted is at once an academic satire, a period novel, and a tale of suspense. Shreve's ability to nimbly hop through genres brings a liveliness to this story of love gone depressingly wrong. Van Tassel is an undistinguished professor of rhetoric at Thrupp College and a confirmed bachelor when he meets--in no less flamy a scenario than a hotel fire--the arresting Miss Etna Bliss. Immediately smitten, he woos and wins her. At least, he persuades her to become his wife. But Van Tassel hasn't really won her. Etna keeps her secrets and her feelings to herself. The extent of her withholding only becomes clear after a couple of kids and a decade or so of marriage. Then we find out that she's been creating a secret haven for herself all along. Van Tassel is in turn revealed--through his own priggish, puffed-up sentences--as something of a monster. The book is cleverly done; watching Etna through Van Tassel's eyes is like looking at beautiful bird from a hungry cat's point of view. But Van Tassel's voice might be too well written; he's pedantic and dull and snarky all at once, and by the end we find that we, like Etna, can't bear his company a minute longer.--Claire Dederer","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01kx246t19kn1s0n7xnpqy9g93.jpg?v=fdd69be1c5","LCF~BetQ?w4T00WXX9xb0fMxxa.8",2005,372,[94
"01kx246t13e4k2f90rbmx61ang","anita-shreve-upzf","Anita Shreve",[99,100
15,"Drama","drama",[
"slow",[72,108],"melancholic",[110,111,112],"forbidden-love","betrayal","dual-timeline
"01kx253536nprt15k4z1wrxxzb","soul-pkjd","Soul","Learner's The Witch of Cologne is an erotically-charged novel of people swept inexorably along by events they could not control. In Soul, Learner relates the story of Lavinia and Julia Huntington, passionate women trapped in emotional whirlpools that threaten to drown them and everyone they love. In 19th century Britain, Lavinia is married to an older man who seems to appreciate her lively curiosity. Lavinia proves to be an apt pupil in both the study and the bedroom, glorying in the pleasures of the physical. In 21st century Los Angeles, geneticist Julia is trying to identify people who can kill without remorse. Stunned to discover that she seems to possess the trait she is looking for, Julia is reassured of her emotions by her intense passion for her husband and her delight in her pregnancy. In the past, Lavinia's desire for her husband grows, but his cools as he becomes fascinated with another. In the present, Julia's love overwhelms her husband, who leaves her. Lavinia and Julia feel the tortures of passion unspent. Cold logic tells them that the deaths of their tormentors will bring them peace. Separated by a hundred years, two Huntington women face the same decision. Their choices will echo far into the future.","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01kx25353p383248c4g41ydhcy.jpg?v=b8a60ce4e2","LDCPIu-;014.0fIp%1xu4.M{~V-p",2008,432,[123
"01kx25353j2rj9sh7k65vgnxbv","tobsha-learner-l5jf","Tobsha Learner",[128,132
39,"Erotica","erotica
[
[72,136],"dark",[],[139
"theme
143,169
"01kwzrjrvyef5py4v4v456qjwn","hinds-feet-on-high-places-gc7e","Hinds' Feet on High Places","A young woman named Much Afraid, physically scarred by deformity and a stutter, sets out from her family's valley of fear into the wilderness.
