Synopsis

The princess saves herself in this one is the debut poetry collection from Amanda Lovelace, and the first book in the Women Are Some Kind of Magic series. Written in spare, direct free verse, it moves through four sections — the princess, the damsel, the queen, and you — that trace a survivor's path from childhood and abuse, through grief and loss, toward reclaiming her own power.

Drawing on fairy-tale imagery, Lovelace reworks the language of princesses, damsels, and queens into a modern story of trauma and recovery, refusing the idea that a woman needs rescuing. The closing section turns directly to the reader with words of encouragement and solidarity.

Winner of the Goodreads Choice Award for Poetry, this is an intimate, unflinching collection about survival, self-worth, and writing yourself a better ending.
