Synopsis

Charlie N. Holmberg returns to the world of The Paper Magician with a new apprentice at its centre. Alvie Brechenmacher has come to London to train in Polymaking, the newest of the magical disciplines and the magic of bespelling plastic. An inventor at heart, she is impatient to make discoveries rather than merely study them.

Studying under the world-renowned magician Marion Praff, Alvie's enthusiasm reinvigorates her mentor's stalled work. Together they build a device that could change Polymaking, and the world, forever. But when a rival learns what they are attempting, he conspires to steal the invention and claim the credit for himself.

To thwart him, Alvie must think a step ahead in a high-stakes world of magical discovery where not everyone plays fair. Though set in the same world as the original trilogy, the book follows a new protagonist and stands on its own.
