Synopsis

The Penguin Book of Japanese Short Stories is an expansive anthology edited by Jay Rubin, featuring 34 selections that trace the evolution of Japanese short fiction over more than a century. The collection opens with Jun'ichirō Tanizaki's "The Story of Tomoda and Matsunaga" and includes classics from Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, as well as modern works by Mieko Kawakami and Kazumi Saeki, introduced by Haruki Murakami. Each story is accompanied by a note on its historical context or translation history.
