Synopsis

Twenty years ago the humans came for their gods. In the revolution that followed, the gods were all but wiped out, and ever since, the children they left behind have been imprisoned in an orphanage and watched day and night by the ruthless Guard. Any child who shows signs of divine power vanishes from their bed in the night, and no one will admit they ever existed.

No one has ever escaped the orphanage. Then seventeen-year-old Hero does — at a terrible price. Her sister is captured by the Guard and held in a prison in the northern sea, and Hero sets out to get her back while Guardsmen hunt her across the country.

But not all the gods are dead. The ones waiting for Hero in the north have plans of their own for her, plans that will change the world, and the further she goes the more sharply she has to decide how far she is willing to go to do what needs to be done. Helena Coggan's standalone YA fantasy.
