I loved the concept, I loved how reality, legends, and magic weaved together in the past, present, and future.
I loved learning about the indigenous cultures, specifically of the Blackfeet tribe, as the story unfolded.
The main characters were very well-written and developed. Watching Lewis deal with his grief and regret, slowly lose his sanity, and then seeing how far he went, was heartbreaking and horrifying. Cass and Gabe turning against each other was also painful to see.
Denorah was an unexpected but compelling protagonist.
I loved the added elk perspective at the end of Part 1, and how seamlessly the narration shifted not only among the humans, but between the humans and the elk too.
I felt for the young elk and her seeking revenge.
So overall, I enjoyed this story immensely, but I had a big problem with the writing style; to be fair, this may be a me problem. The sentences were extremely long, with multiple subordinate clauses, interrupters, sometimes clauses within clauses. This made it really confusing, I constantly had to re-read sentences just to make sense of them.
Listening to the audiobook while reading the book helped me get used to writing style, to anticipate the pauses, the interrupters, within the sentences. The narrator was also great
