Synopsis

Berlin, 1949. Amid the chaos of defeat, Germany is a place of dirty deals, rampant greed, and fleeing Nazis. Bernie Gunther, a former Berlin policeman forced to serve in the SS, has relocated to Munich to work as a private investigator. Business is slow until a woman hires him for what sounds like a simple job: she doesn't want her husband back, only confirmation that the war criminal is dead.

Nothing in postwar Germany is as simple as it appears, and Bernie is soon hunted from multiple directions as the case pulls in Nazi hunters, American occupation forces and the CIA. Publishers Weekly called it "perfectly plotted," praising Kerr's stylish noir prose. The fourth Bernie Gunther novel marks his return after a fifteen-year gap from the original Berlin Trilogy.
