Epictetus (c. 55 – 135 AD) was a Greek Stoic philosopher. He was born a slave at Hierapolis, Phrygia (present day Pamukkale, Turkey) and lived in Rome until his banishment, when he went to Nicopolis in northwestern Greece for the rest of his life. His teachings were written down and published by his pupil Arrian in his Discourses and Enchiridion. Source: [Epictetus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epictetus) on Wikipedia.

Elizabeth Carter (1717-1806) was a prominent 18th-century English writer. She is celebrated for her important translation of Epictetus's Moral Discourses. Readers can also explore her insightful letters, which offer a window into her intellectual world and friendships.

W. H. D. Rouse was a scholar and translator, perhaps best known for his version of The Moral Discourses of Epictetus. He also shared his love for folklore, collecting tales like The Talking Thrush and The Giant Crab and Other Tales from Old India. His academic work included a comparative grammar of Indo-Germanic languages.
