Atile'i, a man with a rare eye condition, survives a shipwreck and ends up living in a coastal town, convinced he is dead and trapped in a purgatorial world. Alice, a woman living in a house on the edge of a sea that has encroached upon the land, is told by a mysterious figure that she and her family are already dead. The two strangers' paths converge as they each grapple with the truth of their existence and the nature of the world around them.
