I just finished The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold… and I honestly didn’t love it.
I started this book blindly. All I knew was that it was about a young girl who dies and watches over her family. I didn’t expect it to be so graphic and detailed about her rape and murder, especially from the very first chapter‼️It made me really uncomfortable, and not in a “this is powerful” way, but in a way that was hard to sit with.
I still kept reading, hoping there would be more to the story. But instead, we mainly follow the slow breakdown of the family and how each of them deals with grief, while also seeing how the murderer manages to live with what he’s done. Since we already know everything from the beginning, there’s no real suspense or mystery. I kept waiting for something more to happen… but it never really did. I was honestly bored at times and I probably should have DNFed it when I first had doubts.
I understand that it’s a story about grief, trauma, and healing. And I can see why it might resonate with some readers. But for me, it just didn’t work.
I wouldn’t really recommend it to sensitive readers.
