He does his work without question until a series of encounters cracks the surface of his contented life: a curious teenage neighbor who asks whether he is really happy, a woman who chooses to die with her books rather than live without them, and a wife who has quietly given up on everything but the voices coming from the walls.

Unsettled, Montag begins to steal the books he is supposed to destroy, hoping they hold whatever it is his world has lost. His awakening puts him on a collision course with his superior and with a society engineered to keep everyone entertained, medicated, and incapable of sustained thought.

Ray Bradbury's classic dystopian novel is a fierce, lyrical warning about censorship, mass media, and the quiet ways a culture can decide that thinking is too much trouble. When the Emperor grants stewardship of Arrakis to House Atreides, Duke Leto knows the gift is a trap laid by his mortal enemies, House Harkonnen. He takes it anyway, moving his family and household to the harsh world of sand, sandworms, and the fierce, blue-eyed native Fremen.

At the center of the story is Leto's young son, Paul Atreides, heir to a noble house and the possible fulfilment of a centuries-old breeding program and prophecy. Betrayal scatters his world, and Paul is forced into the deep desert, where he must survive among the Fremen and reckon with a destiny that could reshape the galaxy — and cost far more than he imagines.

Frank Herbert's landmark novel is a dense, layered epic of ecology, religion, politics, and the perils of messianic power. Everywhere he goes, the face of Big Brother watches from posters and the ever-present telescreen watches back, recording every word and expression. Even a private thought against the Party is a crime punishable by death.

Worn down by hunger, surveillance, and the deliberate poverty of daily life, Winston begins to keep a secret diary and to nurse a quiet, dangerous conviction that the past was different and the truth still exists somewhere outside the Party's control. When he falls into a forbidden love affair with a bold young woman named Julia, the two carve out a small world of their own and let themselves imagine resistance. Their rebellion draws the attention of the inner Party and the enigmatic official O'Brien, and Winston is forced to confront just how far a total state will go to own not only a person's actions but their mind.

George Orwell's 1949 novel gave the language "Big Brother," "doublethink," "thoughtcrime," and "Newspeak," and remains one of the most influential warnings ever written about totalitarianism, propaganda, and the manipulation of truth. He keeps careful journals, catalogues the statues, fishes and gathers seaweed, and tends the bones of the dead.

Piranesi believes that only fifteen people have ever existed, and that he is the only living inhabitant apart from the Other — a well-dressed man who appears twice a week to enlist Piranesi's help in a search for A Great and Secret Knowledge. But messages start to appear that Piranesi did not write, evidence mounts of someone else moving through the halls, and the neat certainties of his journals begin to contradict one another. As he pieces the clues together, a terrible truth surfaces about who he is and how he came to the House.

Susanna Clarke's spare, hypnotic second novel — winner of the 2021 Women's Prize for Fiction — is a haunting meditation on solitude, memory, and wonder, told entirely from inside one of the most singular narrators in recent fiction.","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/works/01/01kjswdg86edn956hz27wnyhh1.jpg","L37Tzrt60KoL00afkXe.~VoJ-ot7","4.50",272,[1031
"01kjswdg9qh2fpacdy3zevc87c","susanna-clarke-6tho","Susanna Clarke",[1036,1037,1038,1039
[
[641,144,97],[643
"genre
1048,1080,1116,1142,1158,1185
"01kjqtygnr8a98z1bkfjhzrt3e","the-midnight-library-zdwq","The Midnight Library","Between life and death, there is a library — and its shelves are endless. When Nora Seed reaches her lowest point, convinced she has nothing left to offer the world, she finds herself in the Midnight Library, a place suspended at the stroke of midnight where the clocks never move. Each book on its shelves opens onto a different version of the life she might have lived: the marriage she walked away from, the Olympic swimming career her father dreamed for her, the rock band she abandoned, the small choices and the enormous ones.

Guided by Mrs. Elm, the school librarian who was once kind to her, Nora begins to slip between these lives, testing the shape of her regrets against the reality of the paths not taken. Each life teaches her something about the difference between the life she imagined and the one she can actually inhabit.

Matt Haig's international bestseller is a warm, quietly philosophical fable about depression, regret, and the possibility of change. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel is a compact, lyrical portrait of the Jazz Age and a piercing critique of the American Dream. Its symbols — the green light across the bay, the fading eyes of Doctor T. At school Connell is well-liked and Marianne is a prickly outsider, yet a private understanding forms between them that neither is willing to make public. When both leave for Trinity College Dublin their social positions reverse, and the pull between them survives new relationships, class anxiety, long silences, and repeated misreadings of each other's intentions.

Sally Rooney charts the shifting balance of power between the two with unusual attention to the small betrayals and tendernesses that shape an intimate relationship. Money, status, and the difficulty of asking plainly for what you want run beneath nearly every scene, as do questions of mental health, control, and belonging.

Written in spare, present-tense prose that moves fluidly between the two characters, the novel is less a conventional romance than a study of how two people keep finding their way back to each other while struggling to say what they mean. I love the characters, most of them were relatable, and their perspectives and experiences portraying the slice of life fairly well.

I enjoyed both The Lonesome Bodybuilder and An Exotic Marriage (from characters, narratives and storytelling). Fitting Room was okay but I did not fancy the ending that much even though I love the characters so much. I Called You By Name was mysteriously engaging, I like that it was 'awkward' and mundane at the same time.

Most of the pieces having a weird aftertaste to me, either too strange (in a good way) or too bland (not my cup of tea).
