Synopsis

Vita e opinioni del gatto Murr, scritto tra il 1820 e il 1822, rappresenta uno degli esperimenti più raffinati e divertenti del XIX secolo, originariamente composto dall’alternanza di due autobiografie: quella di un compositore lunatico e ipocondriaco, Johannes Kreisler, e quella di un gatto, curioso e attaccabrighe, dotato al punto di poter scrivere la propria versione del loro rapporto. Nella presente edizione si è scelto di seguire una delle due vicende, ovvero l’autobiografia del gatto Murr, ispirato al soriano realmente appartenuto all’autore. In questo esuberante e bizzarro romanzo, Hoffmann evoca magistralmente la forza del fantastico, del ridicolo e del sublime che pervadono la quotidianità.

Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann was a German Romantic author of fantasy and Gothic horror, a jurist, composer, music critic and artist. His stories form the basis of Jacques Offenbach's opera The Tales of Hoffmann, in which Hoffmann appears (heavily fictionalized) as the hero. He is also the author of the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, on which Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker is based.
