Synopsis

Adrian Healey is a man who cannot stop telling lies, even to himself. Told out of chronological order, the novel follows him from his days as a brilliant, performative student at a British public school through his years at Cambridge, where he becomes entangled in a parody of Cold War espionage. Each chapter is a layer of performance: a witty retort, a fabricated romance, a invented scandal — and at the end of the book, Adrian confesses to the reader exactly how much of his own story he has invented. Beneath the comedy lies a genuine, melancholy love for his old friend Hugo, and a quiet meditation on the cost of always performing for an audience. Stephen Fry's debut is a comic masterpiece of unreliable narration, satire, and the enduring difficulty of being known for who you actually are.
