First of all it's ''You Nezbe" and "Harry Houli". Second the Harry Hole series prove that scandinavian writers are the masters of dark and gloomy crime fiction (Nesbø, Lackberg, Larsson..). Third, Harry Hole is the epitome of the depressed, alcoholic, tormented soul, an unsubordinate detective whose genius and resourfulness (kudos for breaking his jaw and tearing his flesh with a nail on a wall to get a deathly device out of his mouth) excuse all his wrongdoings (binge drinking for days, opium smoking, gambling, having the triad wanting to kill him, never listening to anyone's advice..).
He is tortured by a love that will never be again, he pushes people away, he is f••••• up in so many levels that it's still a wonder how his brain still function and can solve such complicated crimes.
Fourth, the story is a wild ride that keeps the suspens until the last moment and even when you think it's over it's not, it's very intricate, every detail counts, in 600 pages not a word is superfluous. After a break I will start a new Harry Hole books, because after The Snowman and The Leopard an addiction starts to build up.
