Synopsis

Detective Renée Ballard works the graveyard shift out of the LAPD's Hollywood Division — the "late show," picking up cases after dark and handing them off at dawn, never seeing one through to the end. Then two cases in a single night refuse to let her go: a savage beating that leaves a young woman clinging to life, and a deadly nightclub shooting. Determined to close them, Ballard works both on her own time, against a department that long ago pushed her to the margins. Michael Connelly introduces a relentless new investigator in the first Renée Ballard novel.
