Astrid has finally broken free of the Sisterhood, but her name has taken on a life of its own. To those she's inspired, she's the Unchained. To those who want her silenced for good, she's the Heretic. Free or not, she can't simply walk away from what she knows.

Using her intimate knowledge of the Sisterhood's inner workings, Astrid throws herself into aiding the moonborn in raids against the abbeys and cathedrals that once controlled her. Even as she fights, she is drawn back into the mysteries of her own forgotten past, forced to reckon with who she was before she became a symbol for everyone else's cause.
