I've had this trilogy on my TBR pile for a long time but what finally made me pick up the book is that the movie adaptation is coming out in January 2021. Sorry, not sorry. I saw the trailer on IMDb and promptly picked up the first book.
The story grabbed my full attention from the first page, and I read it rather quickly. All the secrets and fast action made it easy. The characters are interesting, and the premise is very original.
I often found the unconventional writing amusing since the narrator can't spell anything right. His voice is a bit whiny and annoying, but it can be ignored amid everything that's happening. The lack of punctuation in the action scenes was absolutely brilliant, however. I had to remind myself to breathe several times.
Unfortunately, the story fell a bit short of my expectations. After so much build-up and mystery, I thought it would have a grand finale and revelation. It didn't. By the time it came along, it was so obvious. Plus, the 'surprise' at the end could be seen from a mile ahead. It also didn't feel right that just when Todd comes to his big moral decision, it's taken from his hands, quite literally.
I'm not sure if I'll read the rest of the books in the trilogy. Probably, will give the story some time to settle, and we'll see.
