Synopsis

The Journey opens in 1952, when farmer Ben Morris meets Lucy Baker and her daughter Mary at a churchyard grave inscribed with a claim that the man buried there, Barney Davidson, made "the greatest sacrifice of all." Drawn to Mary, Ben sets out to learn the story behind the words.

The novel then travels back to 1930s England, where Lucy Baker's life becomes entangled with Barney Davidson and his family after she is ostracised for an unwanted pregnancy by the womanising Edward Trent. Taken in by her friend Bridget and raising her son Jamie, Lucy's path crosses Barney's in a story of heartbreak, betrayal, confused loyalties and enduring love.

Josephine Cox weaves the two timelines together as a classic English family saga, tracing how one generation's sacrifice shapes the next.
