Synopsis

Thomas Covenant, after a brief return to his own world, is once again drawn into the Land, where forty years have passed. Lord Foul's forces, led by a Giant Raver, are on a destructive march, and the Council of Lords finds their magic useless against Foul's Illearth Stone. High Lord Elena desperately turns to Covenant and the legendary white gold magic of his ring, but Covenant remains an Unbeliever, questioning the Land's reality and unsure how to wield his power.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to read The Illearth War in order?

This is the second book in The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, and it continues directly from the events of the first book, Lord Foul's Bane. Reading the series in publication order is essential to understand the character development and ongoing plot.

  • Does The Illearth War end on a cliffhanger?

The Illearth War concludes with significant plot developments, but it is part of a larger narrative arc within the first trilogy. While some immediate conflicts are resolved, the overarching story of Thomas Covenant's journey and the fate of the Land continues into the next book.

  • How does The Illearth War compare to Stephen R. Donaldson's other works?

The Illearth War continues the distinctive narrative style and philosophical depth established in Donaldson's first book, focusing on a morally complex protagonist and exploring themes of belief, responsibility, and the nature of reality. Readers familiar with his later series, such as The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, will recognize the consistent exploration of these challenging themes.
