About the author

E
Elizabeth Kostova

Kostova's interest in the Dracula legend began with the stories her father told her about the vampire when she was a child. The family lived in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1972, while her father was teaching at a local university; during that year, the family traveled across Europe. According to Kostova, "It was the formative experience of my childhood." Kostova's interest in books and libraries began early as well. Her mother, a librarian, frequently took her and her sisters to the public library...

Frequently asked questions

  • Is The Historian based on a true story?

No, but it is built around real history. Vlad Tepes (Vlad III of Wallachia, c. 1431-1476/77) was a real fifteenth-century prince known for impaling his enemies, and he is the historical figure behind the Dracula legend Bram Stoker later fictionalized. Elizabeth Kostova blends that documented history with an invented premise -- that Vlad survived as an undead scholar -- and follows three generations of historians who investigate it.

  • Is there a sequel to The Historian?

Not a direct one. For years Elizabeth Kostova said she had no plans to revisit the story. In 2026 she published Mystery Play, a new standalone novel set in the same world -- it follows a different family and features one of the mysterious books commissioned by Vlad Tepes that also appears in The Historian -- but it is not a numbered sequel and does not continue this book's characters or plot.
