Bookreview :
I've been wrapping my head around to come up with a rightful #review for this trailblazing #book .
One that could give it proper justice , but words have been failing me for awhile .
I'm pretty sure it's due to the powerful messages that the author displayed with brutal honesty and fine-drawn subtlety in between its chapters .
The story is centered around a young black teenager girl : Starr Carter , who witnesses the horrifying murder of her childhood friend: Khalil by a white police officer who stopped their car and assumed that they were "dangerous" and considered them as a "threat" for no apparent reason other than racist profiling.
An unfair case that keeps on happening every now and then in the US sadly.
We follow the journey of Starr afterwards as she tries hard to cope with the tragedy and navigates through the ascension of tensions that will follow up the public protests to demand Justice for khalil's murder .
This book details the flaws of the American justice system and educates us on what being a poc in America really means. It shines the light on the Black Lives Matter movement and how rooted the systematic racism , otherism , and police brutality , truly are in the American society.
It's a book that succeeds on opening our eyes to the harshness of those realities and revives our empathy and solidarity in the best ways possible.
A book filled with love and warmth, pain and despair, comfort and discomfort, and that helps you to find your own voice and use it for the good of the marginalized communities and minorities.
I seriously can't stop talking about it and won't stop talking about it because the issues are still remaining and relevant to this day and age. And I highly recommend you to read it.
I highlighted lots of #quotes while reading it and I'll live by this one forever :
"SOMETIMES YOU CAN DO EVERYTHING RIGHT AND THINGS WILL STILL GO WRONG . THE KEY IS TO NEVER STOP DOING RIGHT ".
My personal rating : ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
