Frequently asked questions

  • Can I read this book without having read the previous ones in the series?

This novel is the fourth installment in a continuous narrative arc known as the Corwin Cycle and relies heavily on the events, character relationships, and world-building established in the preceding three books. Starting here would result in significant confusion regarding the plot and the complex history of the royal family.

  • Is there a specific way this story was originally published that affects its structure?

The novel was originally serialized in a science fiction magazine before being collected into book form. Because of this, the narrative is paced in relatively short, dense segments that frequently conclude on dramatic cliffhangers to maintain reader interest between installments.
