This book has significant inconsistency issues. The characterization, pacing, and writing quality fluctuate a lot. I gave up when a scene, that was clearly supposed to be dramatic and show relationship progress, just felt ridiculous, wildly out of character, and stilted to the point of making me cringe.
Very little happens in the first half, Kevin's visit and the interview being the only memorable part. I've skimmed the second half and it doesn't seem like anything more really happens.
While I love Jean and adore Jeremy, I was mostly invested in scenes of Jean with side characters. Jeremy's family situation is such an overused trope and his family is portrayed so cartoonishly that I cannot treat it seriously. It comes off as parody, which I assume isn't intentional. A lot of scenes between Jean and Jeremy, that are supposed to evoke romance, to me seemed reductive—flat, out of place or even distasteful.
This part of the series is a bizarre mix of Nora's previous books and a cliche ya contemporary romance (not a genre I'd typically choose to read), which maybe could work in theory but in practice reads weird and disjointed.
