“That day, I tell myself that even if I am not getting anything in this life, I will go to school. I will finish my primary and secondary and university schooling and become teacher because I don’t just want to be having any kind of voice...
I want a louding voice.”
.
Adunni is a 14 year old Nigerian girl who’s true life goal is to be educated. A louding voice is what her mother used to tell her is what she needed to be heard.
With her mothers support, she receives an education. Until her mother dies and her father sells her to be the third wife of a wealthy man in the village. In a series of unfortunate events, Adunni finds herself escaping to the city. Upon arriving, she finds herself in another bad situation. Whilst navigating how to survive day to day, she finds friends in unexpected places. She always finds the kindness in people no matter how flawed they are.
I finished this book today. And wow. What an emotional ride! I felt so sad for Adunni. For a girl that was put through so much, her motivation for a better life had me feeling so inspired. It made me stop and think how fortunate a whole lot of us are. It made me think to look for the light in a dark tunnel and to always be kind.
This book is very emotional and comes with trigger warnings
