Synopsis

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest picks up immediately after the events of The Girl Who Played with Fire: Lisbeth Salander is hospitalized with a bullet lodged near her brain, under police guard and facing prosecution for multiple murders she didn't commit. Confined and unable to act directly, she has to rely on Mikael Blomkvist and the team at Millennium magazine to dig into the secret section of the Swedish security police that has protected her abuser for decades and framed her as dangerously unstable.

Larsson widens the trilogy's scope here into a procedural about institutional cover-up — corrupt intelligence officers, a hostile media campaign against Lisbeth, and a courtroom battle where her entire psychiatric history becomes evidence. Blomkvist's investigative journalism drives much of the external plot while Lisbeth, mostly immobile for the book's first half, remains its ferocious moral center.

As the conclusion to the Millennium trilogy, this volume resolves the conspiracy plot threaded through the earlier books and gives Lisbeth Salander the direct reckoning with her abusers that the series has been building toward.
