Synopsis

Every hundred years, the gods of Olympus let mortals fight in their place. In this contemporary Greek-mythology romantasy, the narrator has never been favored by the gods — cursed, in fact, thanks to Zeus, and content to keep her head down as an office clerk for the Order of Thieves in Zeus's own patron city of San Francisco.

That changes the night she crosses paths with Hades, the ruthless King of the Underworld, who has entered the Crucible for the first time and chosen her — a nobody with a curse on her shoulders — as his mortal champion. As the contest's trials escalate and the line between pawn and partner blurs, she has to figure out what Hades actually wants from her, and what she is willing to risk to find out.

The first book in Abigail Owen's "The Crucible" series, blending Greek mythology, high-stakes competition, and a slow-burn enemies-to-something romance between a mortal and a god.
