Synopsis

In 1949, Black jazz pianist Sonny-Rett Payne leaves New York for Paris, seeking escape from family disapproval and racial prejudice. His European success and eventual death set the stage for a story of jazz, family strife, and the artist's place in society. Decades later, Sonny-Rett's eight-year-old Parisian grandson visits his grandfather's old Brooklyn neighborhood for a memorial concert. The child's presence unearths old family rivalries and community tensions that led to Sonny-Rett's exile, raising questions about whether the boy will bring reconciliation or become a pawn in ongoing power struggles.
