Synopsis

In AD 848, Bernwyn of Lythe, a young ealdorman's daughter, chooses a life of religious devotion over marriage. When she is found murdered in the chapel, Viking raiders are suspected, and butterflies on her body are seen as a divine sign. However, questions arise about Bernwyn's true nature and whether the saintly deeds attributed to her were genuine, leading to the unsettling possibility of a shrine built to a false virgin.
