Synopsis

In a future where the ruling elite, the Optimen, maintain their power through genetic engineering and a caste system that renders most of humanity sterile, a scientist named Harvey Durant discovers a mutation that allows a small group of "viable" humans to reproduce naturally. As he and his partner Lizbeth hide their unborn child from the Optimen's sterilization programs, they become targets of the regime's enforcement. The novel explores the tension between individual agency and a deterministic, engineered society, and the role of chance and uncertainty in shaping human destiny.
