Synopsis

Tres Navarre heads to Austin for a summer teaching job and lodges with his older brother, Garrett, a paraplegic computer programmer and devoted Jimmy Buffett fan who has wagered everything, including the Navarre family ranch, on a high-tech startup. The gamble unravels when Garrett's oldest friend and business partner is found shot dead at his lakefront home, leaving Garrett the prime suspect. To clear his brother, Tres plunges into the volatile world of the software venture, with its corporate raiders, broken friendships, and money disputes among the company's partners. The investigation draws him toward Lake Travis, whose depths hold a secret tied to the crime, and forces him to navigate ruthless takeover schemes and personal grudges. At the same time, the case reopens old wounds in the Navarre family, pressing Tres to reckon with his fraught relationship with his brother even as a methodical killer turns the danger toward both of them. The fourth Tres Navarre novel blends the series' hardboiled action and Texas atmosphere with the boom-era anxieties of the tech industry, anchoring its suspense in family loyalty and the question of how far Tres will go to protect the only sibling he has left.
