The Deep Sky
It is the eve of Earth's environmental collapse, and a single ship—the Phoenix—carries humanity's last hope: eighty elite graduates of a fiercely competitive program, sent to a distant habitable world to give birth to the next generation of our species. Then, eleven months into the voyage, an explosion kills three crew members and knocks the ship off course. Asuka, the sole witness and the only survivor at the blast site, becomes the immediate suspect.
As paranoia spreads through the crew, Asuka must uncover who planted the bomb before the mission—and everyone aboard—is lost. Interwoven flashbacks trace how Asuka, a half-Japanese girl raised in America who barely made the cut, came to represent Japan on the voyage. Yume Kitasei's The Deep Sky is a claustrophobic sci-fi thriller and a thoughtful meditation on identity, belonging, and the weight of carrying a whole future on your shoulders.
The sole witness to the explosion and prime suspect, a half-Japanese woman chosen to represent Japan on the mission.
