Well, this was quite a trip! I've wanted to read the count of Monte Cristo for the longest time, it's always been there on my list of classics that I have to read someday, and I'm glad I finally did. The writing was amazing as expected, but the story was the most enjoyable part of it for me. A young man who, at 19 years old, had everything taken away from him: love, family, career and freedom. The promise of a lifetime of happiness, of a successful future ahead, snatched just like that, by envious and hateful people. So it was no wonder that, as he made his escape from prison, fourteen long years later, there was only one thought on his mind : revenge. And he did it beautifully. But also, by the end of the book, it got too much, even for the reader, even for Edmond himself. I, too, needed to be reminded of how bad things were for him in that prison, for him to go to such great lengths in order to punish those who wronged him. I genuinely feel like each one of them got what they deserved. Maybe Danglars got off too easy, he didn’t suffer a long death, or lose a loved one, but he lost what was most important to him, his fortune.
