Synopsis

Homer Wells grows up in an orphanage, becoming the protégé of its doctor, Wilbur Larch. Dr. Larch provides care, including delivering unwanted babies and performing illegal abortions. Though Homer assists with births, he refuses to participate in abortions. When a young couple arrives seeking Dr. Larch's help, Homer is drawn to their world outside the orphanage, where he must confront new challenges and re-evaluate his upbringing.

John Irving was born in Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1942. His first novel, Setting Free the Bears, was published in 1968, when he was twenty-six. He competed as a wrestler for twenty years, and coached wrestling until he was forty-seven.
