John Bachelor is the saddest kind of spy: not a field agent, not even a desk jockey, but a "milkman" — a part-time handler who checks in on aging retired spies. Having lost his wife, his house, and his savings, he's squatting in a dead man's London flat when two disreputable rogue agents track him down and blackmail him into finding another of his charges who's gone missing.
