Synopsis

Christian Severn, Duke of Mercia, returns from months of brutal captivity and torture in France, sustained only by thoughts of revenge -- and finds his wife and infant son dead, and his young daughter Lucy struck mute with grief. Gillian, Countess of Greendale, newly widowed after an abusive marriage, persuades him to come home and care for Lucy, then stays on to help nurse them both back to life. As their friendship deepens into love, someone begins staging "accidents" that threaten Gillian, while Christian's hunt for Girard, the torturer now living free in London, threatens to consume him.
