Synopsis

After the events of The King Must Die, Theseus returns to Athens to claim his throne and sets out on a series of epic quests across the ancient Mediterranean. Along the way he befriends the Lapith prince Pirithoos, and falls into a fierce, unconventional love with Hippolyta, the warrior queen of the Amazons. As the political pressures of his kingdom and the complexities of his two marriages collide, Theseus must navigate loyalty, duty, and the cost of the choices he makes. Mary Renault's lyrical prose brings the Bronze Age to life with a sense of historical realism and tragic grandeur.
