Synopsis

Penelope Fitzgerald (1916–2000) was an English novelist, poet, essayist and biographer. Born in Lincoln to a literary family — her father, Edmund Knox, edited Punch — she read English at Somerville College, Oxford, then worked at the Ministry of Food and the BBC before turning to writing in her late fifties. Her nine novels include The Bookshop, Offshore (winner of the 1979 Booker Prize), and The Blue Flower, and she also wrote acclaimed biographies of Edward Burne-Jones and her own family, the...
