Sharp, curious, and hungry to understand the world, she is taken to a vast, impossible library at the heart of a great city — a place whose shelves seem to stretch beyond the limits of space and time, tended by strange assistants and guarded by rules no one fully understands. Evar has known nothing but that same library: trapped inside it with his siblings for most of his life, raised by two artificial guardians, searching for a way out and for the girl he glimpsed through the pages.

Mark Lawrence's The Book That Wouldn't Burn braids these two lives together across a story that spans generations and civilizations. It is a novel about knowledge and its dangers, about who controls what a society is allowed to remember, and about the violence that recurs when the same mistakes are read and reread through history. As Livira and Evar are drawn toward each other, the library reveals itself to be far more than a repository of books.

The first volume of the Library Trilogy, it blends epic fantasy with a puzzle-box structure and a deep love of reading itself, building toward revelations that reframe everything that came before.",2023,"en","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/editions/01/01kjz40nvbe2s5q85yrm13rg9y.jpg","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/covers/works-3d/01/01kjz40nsqdgdktbd284f3dfvj.png?v=699a6ff8fe","LDEn-Dj[0MWX}qjsIqay9vfQ%0jZ",0,567,644,"pending",false,true,[21
"01kjrpgyvk05wda8zcntwfc9qr","mark-lawrence-pkje","Mark Lawrence","author","Mark Lawrence was born in 1966, in the United States. Told in two alternating narratives; The Book That Wouldn’t Burn brought me into a perspective of Evar who has lived his whole life trapped within the massive library of King Oanald and Livira; a girl from the Dust who has survived a sabber attack at her village and was recruited to become a librarian in the great library of her kingdom. Their stories go spiral around each other creating a tale of truth and lies as well a conflict that might change the history of Amthane Empire.

An immense worldbuilding for me although the backdrop was mostly stuck in the vast library with its book-choked chamber and walls of stacked books and secret labyrinths; quite dense with its slow pacing storytelling in the earliest and halfway through the middle before it gets strummed with action and suspense for the rest of the plot. Regardless of my average liking to the writing style, I was spellbinded with Livira’s narrative as I find her hardships and growth (from a little girl to adulthood) to be more eloquently narrated and intriguing to delve further; love her chapters in the Dust and her friendship with Malar (he was too vulgar but I like his tough character). The secondary characters in Livira’s narrative was my fav as well!

Evar’s part was a bit hectic, confusing at times and too tedious with minimal progress yet the crossover was done riveting enough for me to grasp the mystery and thrills within their intertwining worlds; perhaps as this was the first instalment that I don’t see his dynamic that much yet. On social conflict, political intrigue, of one’s principles, identity, friendship and the importance of having knowledge; not really a twist and turn narrative to me yet the excitement can be compelling, still.

A light execution and intro to the trilogy although the thickness can be intimidating a bit; love those epigraphs and I feel that the 2nd book will be more action-packed considering the ending to this but I’ll wait.

Thank you Times Reads for sending me a copy to review!","rv-01kr829jes4jhmth7fjcrqdjgj",[],"2026-05-10T04:28:26.000000Z
"01kqps6ma9gd2ctxdwdt9gs935","review-of-the-book-that-wouldnt-burn-by-nyx","Review of "The Book That Wouldn't Burn" by nyx
185,"Nyx","nyx","https://api.seekquel.app/storage/avatars/185.webp?v=1777807436",279,282,"rv-01kqps6ma9gd2ctxdwdt9gs935",[],"2026-05-03T11:22:28.000000Z
"https://api.seekquel.app/api/works/01kjz40nsqdgdktbd284f3dfvj/reviews"]
