Synopsis

The Bone Shard Emperor is the second novel in Andrea Stewart's The Drowning Empire trilogy, following the acclaimed debut The Bone Shard Daughter. Set in an Asian-inspired archipelago of islands that rise and sink across a vast sea, the series is built around a distinctive magic system, bone shard magic, in which the emperor's power is fueled by fragments of bone, and memory, taken from the empire's own people.

This installment follows Lin Sukai as she moves from claiming the throne to trying to hold it, confronting a construct rebellion, restless island governors, and the return of the mythic Alanga. Told through multiple viewpoints, including the enigmatic smuggler Jovis and his magical companion, the novel expands the world, complicates its politics, and sharpens the moral questions at the heart of the trilogy.

Readers who enjoy inventive epic fantasy with strong worldbuilding, layered mysteries, and morally complex characters will find it a compelling continuation that sets up the trilogy's conclusion, The Bone Shard War.
