I was very excited about this book because I liked the previous one, Fangirl Down, a lot, and while I enjoyed the first half—perhaps even a bit more—the story seemed to get worse as it progressed.
I felt the "Au Pair" aspect was underdeveloped, despite being the title of the book. There was very little of Tallulah actually doing her job; even her studies were given more focus. I liked that she connected with Lissa, but it was through activities unrelated to her work.
The romance had many ups and downs. There were moments that I found very sweet, but there were also scenes where the age difference felt uncomfortable, and the spicy scenes using the word “Daddy” were cringeworthy. I’m sorry, it’s just not my thing.
My biggest issue was when Burgess seemed to only think about Tallulah and prioritized his feelings over his daughter’s: When Lissa is crying and realizing that her parents will never get back together, it's a significant moment for her, but instead of explaining the situation to her, Burgess goes and hugs his girlfriend. And when he’s in the hospital, his only motivation is Tallulah, and he barely acknowledges his daughter. At first, the father-daughter relationship seemed very touching, but later, it felt like Tessa focused only on the romance, even though Lissa was the reason Tallulah was there in the first place.
I will continue reading the series and hope that the next book is as enjoyable as the first one.
