Synopsis

Edited by Lavie Tidhar, the first volume of The Apex Book of World SF (2009) collects 16 speculative short stories translated from or written across Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Rather than adapting standard Western sci-fi and fantasy tropes, these stories draw directly from local folklore, regional histories, and political realities. The collection spans everything from dark surrealism and urban cyberpunk to quiet magical realism and body horror.
