Juan Carlos Onetti (Montevideo, 1 July 1909 – Madrid, 30 May 1994) was a Uruguayan novelist and short-story writer, and a senior figure of Uruguay's Generación del 45. Largely self-taught, he published the novella El pozo in 1939; its fusion of reality and fantasy is often placed among the first distinctly modern Spanish American novels.
